Google Ads or SEO: which should a Dubai business fund first?

A Dubai boulevard lined with palms in morning haze

They are not competing answers to the same question. One buys demand now, the other captures it later at falling cost. The order matters more than the choice.

The shape of each curve

A paid click costs the same on day one and on day one thousand. Your cost per lead from Google Ads is roughly flat: it improves as the account is optimised, then settles, then drifts up as competitors bid more.

SEO is the opposite. It costs the most at the start and returns nothing for months. Once positions hold, the incremental cost of the next thousand visits is close to zero. The curve falls and keeps falling until something disturbs it.

Plot both over three years and they cross somewhere between month eight and month eighteen in most Dubai categories.

Why the answer is usually both, in a specific order

Fund paid first, because it produces the data everything else needs: which searches convert, what a lead really costs, which landing page works. That is worth the money even before the leads are.

Fund SEO at the same time but expect nothing from it in the first quarter. Its job is to take over the same searches later at a lower cost, so the paid budget can move to searches organic cannot reach.

The mistake is funding SEO alone because it is cheaper per lead in theory, then spending six months with no enquiries at all.

When to skip one

  • Skip paid if your margin cannot absorb Dubai click costs in your category. Check before you commit, not after.
  • Skip SEO if nobody searches for your category. Some products have to be created on social instead.
  • Skip both if the website cannot convert. Fix that first or you are funding a leak.

How to tell whether the handover is working

One number: the share of total leads coming from organic search, tracked monthly. If it is not rising by month six, either the SEO is not working or the paid campaigns are cannibalising the same searches. Both are fixable, and both need to be named in the report rather than discovered a year later.
